I analyze the historical development of popular music in German-speaking countries, forces influencing their traditions and the interrelationship with society.  I also analyze government policies toward popular music as well as the identity discourses underlying these policies.  Finally, I investigate lyrics and music in German popular music as they accommodate global influences within the context of domestic socio-cultural and socio-economic developments.
